as you can image our annual Spring Event has been
postponed to a date still to be determined. it was to have
taken place this Saturday 2nd May 2020 in Providence, but all
events like this are not happening until it’s safe to do so.
in the nearly 15 years we’ve been organizing our
Rock + Roll Yard Sales we’ve never had to cancel an
event. we’ve had a few that had to be moved to raindates,
but we’ve never dealt with anything like what we’re all facing
now with this health crisis. it’s interrupted nearly everything
and has definitely created hardship for the very core
of our events – our vendors.
some of them do sales like ours on the side, but a large
number of our vendors make a living selling at pop-up events
and have seen their incomes dry up without an avenue for
selling their goods. below is something of a virtual
Providence Rock + Roll Yard Sale for you to check out.
please consider spending some time clicking around and
if you have some money to spare, buy something!
below are the vendors who’d been accepted to be part
of our Saturday 2nd May Providence Rock + Roll Yard Sale.
our hope is that you’ll virtually shop and support them.
just click on the photos and business names / descriptions
to make your way to the vendor’s websites, etc.
(those that aren’t clickable don’t have web presences).

more on this later, but greedy and visionless
landlords like ours, Capstone Properties, in addition to
developers, including Brown University, have ruined Thayer
and made it impossible for a shop like What Cheer? to be
sustainable. almost every single independently owned
retail store has been squeezed out of Thayer, and
when there are so few shops, people no longer come to
the street to shop. and now even great local restaurants
are being forced out, only to see more chains move
in, causing rents to go up to absurd levels
that only chains can afford.
we have given it our all, only to see what was
once an incredibly awesome local shopping district
be turned into nothing. so long, Thayer . . .

*
Liverpool in the 1980s. With prospects for the city’s
youth bleak, an ill-fated scheme for unemployed musicians
commenced, inadvertently shaping the future for members
of Space, Cast and The Lightning Seeds, thus giving fresh
impetus to the idea of song as a saviour for the city.
Spearheading this was The La’s, first they conquered
their home town, and then on the brink of hitting the big time
(and eventually inspiring what would become Britpop) Badger
quit to form Americana pioneers The Onset and find international
recognition as a sculptor, before eventually co-founding
Liverpool’s Viper record label (which has recently
released its 100th album).
As well as featuring a host of Mersey Musicians and
characters there are chance meetings with Captain Beefheart,
Jonathan Richman and Frank Sidebottom to name a few but
above all new insights are revealed into the
great lost Liverpool band The La’s.
From the emergence of Punk and New-Wave in the
1970s and on through to the acknowledgment of Liverpool
as Cultural Capital some thirty years on.
The Rhythm and the Tide is Mike Badger’s personal
story as a restlessly creative individual, and a reflection on the
ebb and flow of the music scene in the city that he loves.

The urge to document our surroundings dates back to the cave paintings of primitive beings. As artists, each of us interprets the world in a different way, whether realistic, stylized, fantastic or even surreal. A natural surrounding can be transformed by each artist’s translation of what they see, and this collection will showcase unique perspectives. Curated by Jennifer Daltry, and featuring Jennifer Hrabota Lesser, Lauren Scotto, Maggie Siegel
and Dianne Wilkinson
The Narrows Center For The Arts
16 Anawan Street, Fall River MA 02721
The show will run from June 3rd – July 15th 2016
